Meet my Camp CEO Mentor, Erica Singleton
By: Kara S.

Camp CEO was an amazing experience. Spending time with girls and female CEOs was informational and very rewarding. I learned so much from the other girls’ and CEOs’ experiences.
I especially learned a lot from my CEO, Erica Singleton. Erica is the Head of Distributions for the Atlanta Journal Constitution. I was so excited when I found out that I was paired with her since I want to go into communications as a career.
Erica shared her career story. She has lived in many places around the eastern United States with many different jobs related to news until she came to Atlanta with the AJC.
I also discovered that she and I had a lot in common. We both love to help others. We both also share reading and music as interests.
For part of the week, Erica and I along with the other girls and their CEOs were able to do some camp-tivities (aka activities at camp). We tried the giant swing and archery. Erica had never done either and I hadn’t experienced the giant swing before, so we both had the chance to try something new. Both activities were tons of fun and allowed Erica and I to try new things that may have scared us a bit but turned out to be great experiences.

One tradition of Camp CEO is to share “Pearls of Wisdom.” This is when each CEO shares a piece of advice she has learned over her life. Erica’s “Pearl of Wisdom” for me was “Take good care of yourself as you conquer the world. We have a tendency to serve and take care of our friends and loved ones. Do not forget to take care of yourself. Follow your North Star to follow what motivates you. Pay attention to yourself first! It is a great habit to start early. Make smart choices regarding your health. You cannot help or serve others if you do not keep yourself healthy!” She learned this lesson when she became sick and was unable to take care of her family as much as she wanted. She realized that she couldn’t take care of her family if she doesn’t take care of herself first. I really appreciated this advice because I have a tendency to try to help and take care of others and before I think of how I can help myself.
Camp CEO was a great experience that I am so glad I was able to attend. I learned a lot from Erica Singleton and the other CEOs. I hope that I will be able to stay in touch with Erica and that I can attend Camp CEO again next year. A big thank you to Erica for being awesome and making that week great!
