The Lime Green Giraffe wouldn't exist without the input of our staff over the years - check out the stories below of some our alumni and how the LGG has impacted their lives!

2004 - Margaret Heyward

What is your favorite memory of your time on the Lime Green Giraffe Staff?

“Deciding on the name "Lime Green Giraffe"! I can't completely recall how the actual name came about, but it was a fun and exciting time to create from scratch a new platform to share stories with other Girl Scouts. The photo shoots for each issue were also really enjoyable in helping bring the magazine to life with images alongside the stories. On a side note - my mom recently found a little Lime Green Giraffe magnet that we received back in the early days of the magazine, and she brought it to me on a visit. Brings back great memories 🙂”

My husband is a residential and commercial real estate agent and we are able to share clients and help each other grow.”

Colt and I have rescued and rehomed over 60 kittens and or dogs off our street. These 8 are the fur balls that picked us for their forever home. I hope in 5 years we will have fixed the stray problem.

In my professional life, I hope to have Psalter Co. LLC. be a known resource in my community. Hopefully we will brick and mortar by then. There is this cute run down cottage near my home and I would love to fix it up and make it into a showroom that leads to a small vintage speakeasy café.”

How has the Lime Green Giraffe influenced you through your current life/career path?

“Girl Scouts and Lime Green Giraffe, taught me how to create an idea, develop it and execute it. Being someone who has an expressive and receptive language disorder, words have always been a challenge. Not making my middle school yearbook committee, winning Miss Georgia Preliminary Interviews or anything related to words was not a defeat. Instead I use it as my strength, as it gave me some relentless persistence. LGG gave me an outlet to be creative with words and pictures. I learned that you are the only one that can hold yourself back because if you want it bad enough anything is possible. So thankful for the environment that they have given to so many young girls."

What advice to give to young girls who want to accomplish their goals?

“Don't give up! When you feel like there is not a way, find a way. Nothing is ever impossible. Our society would have never progressed if things were truly impossible. If there isn't a path to your goal then make your own path. With Persistence and God you can achieve anything.”

2010 - Leka Gopal

2014 - Alli Benelli

What is your favorite memory of your time on the Lime Green Giraffe Staff?

“It's hard to pick just one! I loved all the stories I got to cover as a writer, and I enjoyed being a part of Lime Green Giraffe with my younger sister for the last four years. A more specific memory was around 2011/2012 when we made care packages for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta while we were meeting at Georgia Tech. Afterwards, we went on a field trip to the World of Coca Cola. That was a super cool field trip! I will never forget how much we all wanted to try the Beverly drink because it is infamous for being so terrible. And we confirmed that to be true!

For an article-related memory, it was wild to learn that Marnye, our adult volunteer,  got a call from someone associated with the Pentagon related to a story I had written about a Major General in the US Army. We were all very surprised by that!”

What are you doing right now?

“I'm currently in graduate school at West Virginia University (WVU) in the Wildlife and Fisheries Resources program! After studying Coastal Environmental Science at Louisiana State University (LSU) for my undergrad, I became a Conservation Educator within the Baton Rouge Parks and Rec system, which I really enjoyed. Because of that job, I decided to pursue further studies and am planning to defend a Master's Thesis over the summer. My research has focused on Human Dimensions/Social Science aspects of natural resources, and my thesis is specifically about people and coral reefs in the Florida Keys. During graduate school, I also helped collect recreational survey data in National Forests in Oregon and Montana these past two summers. Starting in May 2025 and continuing through October, I plan to help collect recreational survey data in northwestern Pennsylvania and New York related to a Great Lakes study for Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.”

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

“I think I could see myself in some sort of Park Ranger role, whether that's in a coastal setting or somewhere like a National Forest or National Park. I love getting to explore nature and being outside while also helping people enjoy the outdoors and learn more about our beautiful world. I think a Park Ranger role, or something similar, could be a great job that allows me to combine all of those passions. But if I find something I'm really really interested in researching over the next few years, there's a chance I could go on to do a PhD. For now, I think being a full-time Park Ranger sounds like a fun place to be!”

How has the Lime Green Giraffe influenced you through your current life/career path?

“I have done lots of writing throughout my collegiate experience, so the opportunity to get more writing experience through LGG in middle and high school was really helpful! I think that has made me a much better and more confident writer in general, which is especially important as I am currently working on a Master's Thesis. I've also been in job and research settings recently that require a lot of collaboration and communication. Just like with LGG, there's a lot of planning and writing I've done on my own in the jobs that I've had, but teamwork is really important too. Through LGG, I got to experience collaborating with other girls and mentors to brainstorm and each contribute our own unique ideas and articles to develop an exciting new issue together. This has definitely helped me in my collaborations with others in my recent jobs and research teams.”

What advice to give to young girls who want to accomplish their goals?

“You may have the same goal as someone else (for example, go to graduate school), but your path to get there doesn't have to be the same! There are so many options out there, and many paths to accomplish long-term goals are not linear or at least are not the same for everyone. It's okay to walk the road less traveled or take alternate routes because they can all lead you to your end goal if you just remember to keep working toward the goal.

Every exciting experience, every disappointment, every job or opportunity that doesn't work out can all be important turning points and still get you where you need to be. My path to grad school after my undergrad was by no means a "typical" route, but I learned something from every experience along the way and can look back at the pivotal moments that helped me get here.

Something else that can be helpful for accomplishing goals is making connections with people! You never know when someone you met or worked with a few years ago could be a big help on your journey to reach your goals now, so try to stay in touch with people as much as possible. Sometimes what matters more is who you know than what you know.

And of course, don't give up on your goals or dreams because someone doesn't think you're capable of achieving them! I can say from experience that some of the most exciting goals to achieve are the ones where you prove to others (and yourself) that it's possible when they told you that you couldn't do it. If you set your mind to it, and you're willing to ask for help along the way, you can accomplish so many things!”

2015 - Sydnie Cobb

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

“Finishing my PhD, working a postdoc at a research institution, (hopefully) updating my nature exploration blog consistently, frolicking on the beach, etc., etc…”

How has the Lime Green Giraffe influenced you through your current life/career path?

“Working with Lime Green Giraffe has had a lasting impact on both my creative journey and my professional career. My time with LGG is what keeps me creative as an adult—I learned to create simply for the joy of creating and to transform those creative ideas into published work. Although I struggled with time management back then (sorry for late articles, Marnye!), working to meet deadlines taught me invaluable skills that I continue to rely on today. The writing skills I developed at LGG now play a central role in my scientific publications, grant proposals, and presentations. Additionally, the organizational and leadership abilities I honed through planning workshops and photo shoots have been instrumental in guiding my professional endeavors.”

What advice to give to young girls who want to accomplish their goals?

“Talk to people who have already accomplished what you are aiming for. Most people are eager to help others, especially in professional organizations. There are "women in ___" groups in every field, which has been instrumental for me in learning how to network and find mentors. You can never start too early.”

“The Lime Green Giraffe is what opened my eyes to communications as a career path! The LGG was the first experience I had managing social media accounts. I realized I really enjoyed it, and from there I was able to pursue internships in social media marketing and ultimately in communications in general. Without the LGG, my career path would look entirely different.”

What advice to give to young girls who want to accomplish their goals?'

“Hard work will never go unnoticed, and a good attitude makes all the difference. Also, don’t be afraid to be unapologetic about your passions and interests. Your enthusiasm and authenticity will attract the people who want to lift you up and encourage you.”

The encouragement and support is what made me pursue engineering. I also learned to communicate about the things that I’m passionate about and share them with others.”

What advice to give to young girls who want to accomplish their goals?

“Believe in yourself, and surround yourself with people who believe in you too! You’re a strong and capable human being and can achieve anything with a can do attitude and a strong support network.”

2019 - Maggie Esz

What is your favorite memory of your time on the Lime Green Giraffe Staff?

“One of my favorite memories from my time on the staff was one of our writing parties. I was pretty new to LGG at the time and I really connected with the rest of the staff and had tons of fun. How has the Lime Green Giraffe influenced you through your current life/career path?

“Lime Green Giraffe has greatly impacted my communication, writing, and teamwork skills. In my time with Lime Green Giraffe I learned so much about writing that I still use today on anything from college essays to emails. Communication was another big skill I was able to grow on with LGG. Being a soccer player, student, and a part of LGG at the same time required a lot of communication, and the adults were always so supportive and encouraging. I think communication is such an important skill to have as you get older so that you feel comfortable talking to anyone. I also got to grow my teamwork skills by working with multiple people on many different articles. We got to build on each other's ideas and accomplish really amazing things.”

What advice to give to young girls who want to accomplish their goals?

“One of the biggest things I always find myself repeating is “You can do hard things.” Although the obstacles you see ahead of you may seem huge, you can’t grow unless you challenge yourself. It may take some more effort or time but that does not make it impossible. And as much as you may want to achieve something make sure you listen to yourself while doing it. It is perfectly ok to take breaks, that does not make you unproductive. Breaks are important to make sure you are not burning yourself out. So keep working diligently at whatever your goals are because you CAN do hard things, do not let anything make you think differently.”

2020 - Zora Felix

What is your favorite memory of your time on the Lime Green Giraffe Staff?

“It's really hard to narrow it down to just one favorite memory because I have so many, but one of the most impactful experiences was interviewing female leaders in our city. I had the opportunity to interview Yum Arnold, the CEO of Leapfrog Services and one of the pioneering women in STEM. It was an incredible experience to learn from her journey, tour Leapfrog Services, and gain insight into the world of technology. One of the biggest lessons I took away from this experience was to never be afraid to fail in the world of STEM and to always embrace learning and new challenges.

Another memorable experience was interviewing Soon Mee Kim, the 2019 Changing the World Awardee and Executive Vice President and Global Diversity and Inclusion Leader for Porter Novelli. Speaking with such influential leaders gave me valuable perspectives on leadership, innovation, and the importance of diversity in various industries. I am truly grateful for these opportunities, which have shaped my confidence and aspirations for the future.”

How has the Lime Green Giraffe influenced you through your current life/career path?

“The Lime Green Giraffe has had a significant impact on my educational and career path by pushing me out of my comfort zone and encouraging me to try new things. Before LGG, I never considered myself a strong writer, but the creative freedom it provided allowed me to explore different writing styles and build confidence in my abilities. Additionally, my time with LGG helped me develop essential leadership skills and gain experience working with people from diverse backgrounds. Collaborating with others on projects we were passionate about taught me the value of teamwork, communication, and embracing different perspectives, skills that continue to benefit me in my academic and professional journey.”

What advice to give to young girls who want to accomplish their goals?

“My advice to young girls who want to accomplish their goals is to stay connected with the people who inspire and support you. Building a strong network can open doors to new opportunities and provide encouragement along the way. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone—growth happens when you challenge yourself. Whenever an opportunity arises, even if it's something you wouldn’t typically consider, give it a try. Push yourself creatively by exploring different styles and perspectives, whether in writing, leadership, or other passions. Every experience, even the unexpected ones, can help shape your path to success.”

It has helped me be open-minded to experiences and opportunities outside of what I am usually interested in, but also being confident in speaking to a room of people and sharing what I have to say. It further has honed a sense of me finding community and sisterhood in every room I step into and has enhanced how I interact with other people who may share similar or different perspectives than me.”

What advice to give to young girls who want to accomplish their goals?

“There is no opportunity too grand or small to achieve your goals. Those small opportunities could amount to something spectacular depending on the people you meet or the doors this opportunity may hold to opening even bigger doors. Also, rejection is redirection and take every rejection as a sign to keep trying and persevering to your end goal. You never know what opportunity you could have missed out because of your rejection and how you handled it. You will end up exactly where you need to be as long as you are open-minded to the journey it takes to get there and the failures needed to create those success stories.”
